Workshop - Peaceful Mind, Easeful Body

June 19th, 2010

Many traditions speak of quieting the mind and making the body comfortable in order to better connect with Spirit. But in our hectic world, busy lifestyles, spinning thoughts and unhealed emotions can lead to a tense mind and even tenser body, making meditation and spiritual practice that much more elusive. A solution? Quiet yourself effortlessly with the ancient Eastern Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help®. By using our hands, fingertips and the breath, we can “unlock” body, mind & spirit. Handouts will be provided - no need to take notes. Just BE and enjoy the relaxation and guided meditation. Repeat attendees welcome!

Looking to Nature for Guidance

January 6th, 2009

One of my favorite ways to recharge is to spend some time in nature. A walk in one of Monmouth or Ocean County’s many beautiful parks has never failed to uplift and restore my spirits, while bringing me insights and inspirations in regards to whatever is on my mind. Walking is a form of moving meditation, which can reconnect you to Spirit & your inner wisdom. Dr. Andrew Weil has discussed that the opposing movement of arms & legs (swinging our arms when we walk) also calms the nervous system.

Long before I was drawn to energy work, I knew something was “going on” outside. The trees, flowers and air all seemed to vibrate, and my heart jumped with delight if I came across a woodland animal or bird. Deepak Chopra advises us to find solace in Nature - it is a simple pleasure and deep Healer available to all of us. Indigenous peoples have long recognized the healing power available in the great outdoors, and have attributed special qualities to Nature and the Creator’s creatures; animals, reptiles, insects and birds are all viewed as totems, or guides, bearing messages and wisdom.

For instance, take the Cardinal. His brilliant red color matches the Root Chakra (the energy center at the base of the spine.) The Root Chakra symbolizes security & connection to the earth. The Cardinal’s message also includes paying attention to our digestion, and this sharp whistling bird can bring us the confidence to speak our truth. Or perhaps you’ve had a stressful day and you come across a ladybug - who asks us to let go of fear and focus on joy. Then a rabbit hops by, symbolizing abundance and making the most of opportunities. You will find that the perfect messenger appears, offering solace and guidance for the situation at hand.

There are websites and books that are fun to explore, detailing the meaning of totems. You can ponder and decipher for yourself the wisdom and meaning of the creatures you come across - whether in the forest, on your way to work, or in the quiet of your own backyard. So remember to spend a little time outside - and pay attention to who visits you! And may you absorb the healing energy Nature so freely gives.

Relax and Re-Charge with Reiki

December 29th, 2008

Stress - we know it can adversely impact our health. These days, it’s virtually impossible to avoid stress - but it’s how we deal with it that counts. A wonderful antidote to our hectic lifestyle is Reiki. Whether you are a practitioner working on yourself, or a client receiving a treatment, Reiki is an effortless way to help yourself relax deeply.

What’s special about Reiki is its ability to bring about deep, regenerative relaxation. Sometimes a “good night’s rest” is not enough - our minds may continue to race even in our sleep. And our dreams can act out our underlying anxieties. Judith Orloff, MD (author, “The Power of Positive Energy”) says our minds can wear us out before we even get out of bed in the morning.

So how can we take ourselves off the treadmill of stress? One way is Reiki; research at the University of Texas Health Science Center has shown that Reiki can bring on the “physiological relaxation response” by decreasing anxiety and systolic blood pressure. This results in the liminal state of awareness - that dreamy mind state between sleep & wakefulness.

Reiki is a complementary therapy, a type of gentle healing touch. Its origins can be traced to Tibet, and it was re-discovered in Japan and brought to the West around Word War II. “Reiki” is a Japanese word that can be translated as “spiritually guided life force energy.” We all have energy flowing through us - various Eastern cultures call this life fore chi, ki, or prana. Western Science has begun to study this energy and its pathways, as in acupuncture and acupressure. When our energy flows freely, we are in a state of health. When it doesn’t, aches & pains and illness can result. Stressful thoughts and situations can through our energy off balance.

What can you expect during a Reiki session? The recipient rests fully clothed on a massage table, while the practitioner acts as a conduit for the universal life force energy. The practitioner lightly places hands on or above various areas of the body, including any areas of discomfort. The Reiki energy flows through the practitioner’s hands, and the receiver may sense heat, tingling, or coolness. A full treatment lasts about an hour, and gives you a chance to rest and let go. Reiki rebalances the energy flow and recharges your batteries - helping body, mind & spirit.

Reiki is not a substitute for medical care, but its benefits can include decreased anxiety, more restful sleep, enhanced immunity, decreased pain, and reduced side effects from medication. The National Institutes of Health is examining the beneficial effects of Reiki on heart disease, diabetes, cancer and fibromyalgia (please see www.nccam.nih.gov). Several hospitals are also adding Reiki to patient care.

So why not experience or re-experience Reiki for yourself? Don’t let stress get the better of you! Let Reiki recharge you, and watch your own ability to heal and relax emerge.
